2024 AUDGPI ICGP Joint ASM

Date: Friday, March 8, 2024 – Saturday, March 9, 2024

The University of Limerick School of Medicine organising team with their collaborators, the Mid-West GP Training Scheme and the Irish College of General Practitioners, are delighted to announce the hosting of the AUDGPI ICGP Joint Annual Scientific Conference for 2024. This conference will be held in person in the University of Limerick beautiful parkland Campus on the 8th and 9th of March 2024.

The Association of University Departments of General Practice in Ireland (AUDGPI) is a national organisation representing academics and clinicians in Primary Care in Ireland. This was established in 1997 to promote excellence in academic general practice and supported by the seven academic departments of general practice in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

AUDGPI aims to support the development of teaching and research within Irish academic general practice and primary care for the benefit of patients, practitioners, educators and researchers in Ireland. This conference gives a platform where the best Irish and International General Practice and Primary Healthcare research can be presented and debated.

We believe passionately that by people coming together and working together and sharing ideas, we can help improve the health of all communities who are ‘living at the edge’.  In one way all communities are living at the edge-as access to treatment, cost of treatment, and healthcare staff recruitment and retention, continue to be barriers to optimal healthcare for communities internationally. Some communities are at the geographical edge, others at the financial edge, more at the edge because of stigma and social exclusion, and all of us are at the edge of sustainability, where we are now questioning our relationship with the planet and the natural world.

The main objective of this conference is to:

  1. Create a safe space for the presentation of scientific work in the field of general practice, primary care, public health, and wider social and
  2. Allow opportunities for the creation of collaborative links between academics and healthcare and social care practitioners.

Keynote Speakers

Professor Maria van den Muijsenbergh
MariaVDM

General Practitioner; Chair of the European Forum for Primary Care (EFPC); member of the Dutch health Council, the quality council of the Dutch National Healthcare Institute and the scientific committee of the WHO Healthy cities programme.

Prof. Dr. Maria van den Muijsenbergh was a general practitioner for 40 years and professor in Health disparities and person centred integrated primary care at the department of Primary and Community care at Radboud University Medical Centre Nijmegen, the Netherlands.  She is also the chair of the European Forum for Primary Care (EFPC). As such she is involved in interprofessional research, teaching and policy activities that focus on strengthening primary care and on the possible contribution of Primary Care in reducing existing socio-economic and ethnic health disparities, so how primary care best can be tailored to the needs of socially vulnerable patients, like migrants or persons with limited health literacy. To achieve equity, a strong person centred, population oriented integrated affordable primary care is required, involving interprofessional collaboration between healthcare, social care, public health and civil society.

She is member of several health policy organisations as the Dutch health Council and the quality council of the Dutch National healthcare Institute and the scientific committee of the WHO Healthy cities programme.

Two New Research Posts in Primary Care with the MIDAS Trial

The MIDAS (Medicines and Social Prescribing to aDdress pAtient priorities in multimorbidity) trial is led by Professor Susan Smith in Trinity College Dublin’s Discipline of Public Health and Primary Care. It aims to evaluate two interventions that will support GP teams providing Chronic Disease Management (CDM) care with a focus on people taking 10 or more medicines, which is a marker of more complex multimorbidity. One intervention involves a GP-based pharmacist to support medicines reviews and the other is a practice based link worker delivering social prescribing to address patient goals and priorities. The study is commencing in March 2024 and we will then be actively recruiting general practices involved in the CDM programme. The MIDAS trial is now advertising the following posts:Research Fellow in General Practice (MIDAS)Post Status: Specific Purpose Contract – 50% FTEResearch Group: Discipline of Public Health and Primary Care, School of Medicine, Trinity College DublinReports to: Professor Susan SmithSalary: Appointment will be made on the IUA Postdoctoral scale, RF Point 1Hours of Work: 50% FTEClosing Date: 12 noon (GMT), 8 March 2024For Details and Application: https://my.corehr.com/pls/trrecruit/erq_jobspec_details_form.jobspec?p_id=036953Research Fellow in Pharmacy (MIDAS)Post Status: Specific Purpose Contract – 60% FTEResearch Group: Discipline of Public Health and Primary Care, School of Medicine, Trinity College DublinReports to: Professor Susan SmithSalary: Appointment will be made on the IUA Postdoctoral scale, PD2 Point 1Hours of Work: 60% FTEClosing Date: 12 noon (GMT), 8 March 2024For Details and Application: https://my.corehr.com/pls/trrecruit/erq_jobspec_details_form.jobspec?p_id=036954 More information about the MIDAS trial can be found on the Primary Care CTNI website: https://primarycaretrials.ie/midas-2/

PRESS RELEASE: The ICGP & AUDGPI call for urgent action on GP placements in Medical Schools.

Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) and Association of University Departments of General Practice in Ireland (AUDGPI) call for urgent action on the funding and development of undergraduate General Practice placements to help address the ongoingGP workforce crisis.

The joint call for action seeks a more formal and structured collaboration between the ICGP Specialist Training Programme and the Medical Schools Departments of General Practice.

A new report, entitled “Medical Student to General Practitioner- an Urgent Call to Action” has been published today (Saturday March 4th) at the 2023 AUDGPI ICGP Joint Annual Scientific Meeting in the University of Galway.

Against the background of a growing GP workforce crisis, this report highlights the low visibility of General Practice at undergraduate level in the country’s Medical Schools, makes recommendations to promote General Practice as a positive career choice, and proposes a clinical academic training pathway in  General Practice.

Mr. Fintan Foy, Chief Executive Officer of the ICGP, said: “The ICGP knows that not enough graduates of Irish medical schools select general practice as a career, which leaves our long-term workforce planning in a highly vulnerable position. This joint report with the AUDGPI sets out 14 recommendations to change that.”

Dr. Maureen Kelly, Lead Author & Associate Professor, School of Medicine, University of Galway, said: “We need to develop and implement a national funding model that supports the hosting and delivery of undergraduate general practice placements for medical students in all medical schools.  The report is a forward-thinking and ambitious approach to GP education. It emphasises the importance of viewing GP education as a continuum.“

The Report was launched on the 2nd day of the  AUDGPI ICGP Joint  Annual Scientific Meeting in Galway. (https://www.audgpi.ie/eventsnews/)

You can read the report here.
